One  day  i  sat  next  to  a  crying,  aged,  ill  widow.  She  cried,  she  wailed,  she  screamed,  she  screamed  out  loud  to  Allah  the  infinitely  loving,  the  infinitely  merciful,  the  infinitely  compassionate… but,  but…  -  i  fear  i  slip  into  heresy  and  blasphemy?  but  Allah  is  infinitely  wise,  the  infinitely  understanding…

 

She  was  being  gang  raped  but  poverty,  need,  destitution,  paucity…  she  educated  her  children  through  blood,  sweat,  tears,  sleepless  nights,  self – debasement,  door  to  door  sales  of  home  foods,  money  borrowed  from  loan  sharks…  Today  they  looked  through  her. 

 

Why  did  they  take  us  out  of  school,  and  dump  us  in  a  madresa,  they  said  that  girls  must  not  go  to  school.  We  learnt  NOTHING  of  the  world.  Today  i  am  a  beggar,  i  can’t  eat.  i  haven’t  got  money  for  food,  for  water,  for  electricity…
